Whole-garden thinking

More than choosing pretty plants.

I think about how the whole landscape works together and how it will change over time. A plant can be beautiful and still be wrong for the place. Good garden decisions begin with understanding the conditions around it.

That means considering long-term health and resilience, not simply what looks good on planting day.

Sun & shade
What the space really receives through the day and season.
Soil
What plants are being asked to grow in.
Water
Thoughtful choices for plants that can thrive in our climate and become water-wise once established.
Trees
The structure, shade, roots, health, and long-term role of the largest plants in the landscape.
Wildlife
How a garden can provide habitat and participate in the living landscape around it.
Maintenance
How much ongoing work fits your life, and how the garden will evolve over time.
The story behind the name

Mother & Daughter Gardeners began long before it had a name.

My mother has been a passionate and highly skilled gardener for as long as I can remember.

She taught me much of what I know, not only about individual plants, but about how to really see a garden: what's thriving, what needs attention, what might work better somewhere else, and how a garden changes and becomes more beautiful over time.

That way of seeing a garden comes from paying attention, experimenting, learning from what works and what doesn't, and understanding that a garden is never really finished.

Today, I'm carrying that knowledge forward through Mother & Daughter Gardeners. I'll be the person you'll usually meet and work with in your garden, while my mother remains behind the scenes as a trusted source of experience, ideas, consultation, and a second set of eyes.

Garden knowledge passed from mother to daughter, and now shared with our neighbors.
Meet Ailala

A gardener first.

I'm Ailala (Ah-lay-lah), an avid and experienced gardener who has spent years putting what my mother taught me into practice in my own Denver garden, and continuing to deepen that knowledge through observation, experimentation, and ongoing learning.

I'm especially interested in how plants, trees, water, light, soil, maintenance, and time interact across an entire landscape. I'm also continuing my education in tree care and arboriculture to bring an increasingly whole-landscape perspective to every garden.

I am not an arborist; this is an area in which I am actively learning and building knowledge.

A future photo belongs here.A natural photograph of Ailala in the garden, or Ailala and her mother together, can replace this panel whenever the right image comes along. No need to delay the site for it.
